For a lot of small business owners, SnapChat is the social media stream they are least familiar with.  However, Snapchat Geofilters and Stories can be great tools for small businesses. Most people over the age of thirty have Facebook, Twitter, and some have Instagram.  SnapChat however, can seem like an unknown entity for most.

What is Snapchat?

Snapchat is a social network but also a messaging platform, like Facebook.  Unlike Facebook and Twitter, Snapchat can only be used from mobile phone devices.  Users can send short videos up to 10 seconds long to people in their friends list, and they can also send written messages.  Video message capabilities were added more recently.

Snapchat stories are not only popular among the general users, but also businesses and celebrities.  It is a collection of your “Snaps” that sticks around for 24 hours.  It can be a great tool to publicize attending and event and convincing people to come out by giving them a glimpse of the event.

Popular magazines now have Snapchat versions of their articles, with music and animations to capture the audience’s interest. They’re short and easily disposable.

I am very excited that Snapchat has decided to make their GeoFilters more affordable to small businesses.  When I looked into this feature last year, it would cost a few hundred dollars to promote a geofilter for a few days.  Now they have reduced the price of Snapchat GeoFilters to about $5 USD per day.


When Should You Use Snapchat Geofilters?

These would be great to use during a special event, either hosted by your business or by the community.  It engages people and also shows their audience that they’re enjoying your business.  If you’re going to use a Snapchat Geofilter, I recommend that you publicize it in your business either with signage, or have your employees tell visitors that a Geofilter is available.

How to Create a Geofilter

You will need a specially sized version of your logo.  You can do this yourself or employ a graphic designer to make one.  Most businesses use their own logo, or a more “fun” variation of it.  The dimensions must be 1080 x 1920 and it must be transparent.  You will need to submit your Geofilter to Snapchat for approval and should do this at least 3-5 days before you intend to use it.

Why do People Fear Snapchat?

As with any social media network, there are fears associated with disposable content. Snapchat has been making headlines in a negative way because of the ease of sharing videos that will disappear in 10 seconds.  This has made it popular for inappropriate content.  For parents, it’s important to educate your children on the potential dangers and hope they make smart decisions themselves.
